Orientation
& Registration Assistance
Once accepted into the program, NOVA begins working with students immediately
by keeping in touch and assisting with scheduling the important EKU Orientation/Registration
day. NOVA Academic Advisors meet with new NOVA learners during Orientation to
assist with course selection for the fall semester. In addition, the NOVA financial
aid consultant will monitor new NOVA learners' financial aid award to ensure
all necessary paperwork is submitted and/or to make referrals to the appropriate
Financial Assistance Coordinator.
It is very important to sign up for an Orientation
date as soon as possible! Dates fill up quickly and the earlier dates
result in the best course selection.
Individualized Academic Advising
The NOVA program employs a unique approach to academic advising. NOVA academic
advising is much more than simply assisting with course registration, although
course selection and assistance with registration is part of the process.
Each NOVA learner is assigned to a specific NOVA advisor who remains as the
learner's supplemental advisor throughout his/her tenure at EKU. The NOVA
academic advising process includes becoming familiar with each learner in
a holistic way, facilitating a strong relationship and personal and academic
services to meet each learner's needs. There is no rush with NOVA's advising
process. The NOVA advisor is sensitive to individual needs and, when necessary,
makes appropriate referrals. Because NOVA advisors do not teach on a full-time
basis, they are able to spend more time providing focused one-on-one advising
which includes:
- A personalized academic and personal needs assessment and development
of a specific plan for academic success
- Exploration of potential careers
- Study strategies and successful classroom learning
- Development of personal and academic goals
- Discussion of courses that meet individual needs and fulfill University
General Education requirements
- Referrals as appropriate
Financial Aid Consulting
The NOVA financial aid consultant maintains a solid working relationship with
EKU's Office of Financial Assistance, ensuring that NOVA learners have ready
access to the important people who help learners receive the financial aid for
which they qualify. This enhanced financial aid assistance includes:
- Guidance in completing necessary forms
- Reminders about important financial aid deadlines
- Updated information regarding grant and scholarship opportunities
Mentoring
A team of trained upper-division EKU students, the
NOVA Peer
Leaders, are assembled to provide a variety of services, including mentoring,
to aid in the first-semester transition to EKU.
Academic Assistance
Tutoring in content areas and in general study skills is provided to NOVA learners
as needed.
NOVA Peer Leaders provide one-on-one and small
group study skills sessions and tutoring as appropriate. Referrals to EKU tutoring
centers are made as appropriate.
